Page 245: Maria Paterno [1886-1967] Maria was “a smiling, lively young lady, with black curly hair and sparkling brown eyes” in 1908 when her future husband, Anthony Campagna, met her. He commented in his book, Anthony Campagna Autobiography- Part 1, that her warmth, directness and the light of her beautiful brown eyes impressed him. Maria played the piano as the family sang both American and Italian songs. Her grandmother described her saying “she is not only a pretty girl, but she is smart, affectionate and skilled in domestic arts.”

In 1920, Maria and Anthony were living at 133 Northern Avenue in New York City, New York with their two sons. [Carla’s note: my research shows that Maria, Anthony, Joseph, and John were living at 344 Northern Avenue according to the 1920 federal census.]

John Ciluzzi [son of Marie’s sister Theresa] described “Aunt Maria” as very slight in build with slanted eyes that made her look somewhat Oriental. She was well dressed and affluent looking.

Anthony and Maria had a beautiful home in Springlake, one in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and one in Chappaqua, New York. The mansion in Chappaqua was a beautiful estate with a tennis court. It was a lovely, quiet place. John visited the couple when he was a small boy of five or six and spent a lot of time with “Aunt Marie” as “Uncle Anthony” spent most of his time at the office. John was impressed by the La Salle automobile that Anthony drove.

“Aunt Marie was very particular about cleaning. She would have all the furniture at their home in Springlake taken outdoors and washed with a hose! This would of course ruin the furniture but she insisted that it be clean. She was meticulous about both her home and her personal appearance.

Marie was probably the most aloof of all the five sisters. She was somewhat of a recluse and was a very independent lady.”

In the year 1930 Marie Paterno Campagna with an act of high munificence erected this pulpit as a gift, the benches and the organ she restored, the walls and the vault had the plinth built so that the temple of god would rise to a true dignity of Christian faith.
