SICILY
The Paterno lineage originated in Paterno, Sicily, as descendants of the Prince’s family of Paterno. The Prince’s family was the ruling class of the region around Mount Etna. When the Saracens (Arabs) invaded Sicily in 10 A.D., the Paterno ancestors migrated to Guardia, Italy.
ITALY
About 150 B.C., Guardia was built and used as a military fortification by the Romans. Guardia was positioned in the southern Apennines Mountain range of Italy, along the Basento River at an altitude of twenty four hundred feet. Sometime after the fall of the Roman Empire, the military abandoned the fort to the farmers and artisans who lived nearby. The name was changed to Castelmezzano, which means “castle in the middle,” as it was situated between castles of two nearby towns. A historical reference to Castelmezzano appeared in the “Barons Catalogue” circa 1000 A.D.. Castallana, Castel de Sangro, and Naples are other sites of family residences in Italy.
Several generations of the Paterno, Campagna, Centrone & Trivigno families lived in Castelmezzano. The Abbate & Silvestri families migrated from Bari, Italy.
