$25,000 Paterno Gems Stolen – 1935
Reward of $5,000 Is Offered by Builder
Jewelry valued at between $25,000 and $50,000 was stolen from Mrs. Charles V. Paterno, wife of the millionaire apartment house build, on March 24 in Pinehurst, N.C., it was learned last night.
The collection is said to have included emeralds, rubies and diamond. A description was sent to police here and in other cities.
When Mrs. Paterno left the Castle, the Paterno’s picturesque medieval dwelling at W. 183rd Street and Pinehurst Avenue less than a month ago, for the Southern resort, she took along her collection of broshets [brooches], bar pins, rings and earrings.
For the return of the stolen jewels, or information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves, Dr. Paterno has offered a $5,000 reward, it was revealed last night.
Police said the case was being handled by detectives of a private agency and the descriptions were filed here merely as routine.
However, this routine will include watching all pawnshops for appearance of the jewels here.
