Living It Up (published 1984) page 304: SALOME, 149 West 105th Street; An abandoned building of 1900 with trompe-l’oeil shutters and shades placed over the now boarded up windows. A Paterno building. Salome, Richard Strauss’s opera based on Oscar Wilde’s play of 1894, had its American debut a the Met Opera House in 1907; denounced as scandalous and sacrilegious by the clergy of NY, it was withdrawn from the repertory.
